Mullingar Town Band shine at World Music Championships in Germany

Mullingar Town Band (MTB) had an unforgettable weekend of performances and competitions at the prestigious Rastede Musiktage, part of the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB) World Music Championships. They participated in multiple categories, showcasing their skills and spirit.

The journey started on Thursday when the band set off at 6am from Mullingar. They flew from Dublin to Hamburg and then travelled to Rastede, where they settled in to their accommodation at a local school. On their flight to Hamburg, the pilot took the opportunity to wish the Mullingar Town Band the best of luck with their competitions during his announcements! The anticipation was palpable as the band prepared for a weekend filled with performances.

On the Friday, the marching band competed in the WAMSB World Championship Show Prelims with their captivating show, ‘Elvis’. Against stiff competition from 24 bands, they placed 12th, securing a spot in the finals on Sunday, and earning a silver award. That remarkable achievement, especially for a young band, was a source of immense pride and emotion. The evening was equally lively as Blasta Brass, the MTB gig band, entertained festival-goers from various countries including Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Holland, Germany, and Ireland.

The band were up early again on Saturday to participate in the Street Parade competition in Rastede. Their performance earned them another silver award and a respectable 12th place out of 19 bands. The rest of the day was spent watching other bands, rehearsing with the concert band, and soaking in the vibrant festival atmosphere. The day concluded with a results ceremony and a spectacular fireworks display.

Sunday was the climax of the weekend, and both the marching and concert bands competed. The band started their day at 6am to prepare for the concert band competition, which began at 9am. Their hard work paid off with a 13th place finish and a bronze award. There was no time to rest though, as the marching band geared up for the show finals at 11.35am. Despite the tight schedule and little sleep, the band delivered a stellar performance, earning another silver award and maintaining their 12th place position in the world rankings. The energy and commitment of every member were evident, making the performance a standout moment of the trip.

After a whirlwind weekend, Monday was a day of relaxation and celebration. The band visited Heide Park, a popular theme park, where they enjoyed a well-deserved break. The members revelled in the thrilling rollercoasters and various attractions, a perfect way to unwind after their hectic schedule.

On the final day of their trip the band returned to Dublin, and then Mullingar, where they met a warm welcome from family and supporters, complete with balloons and banners, celebrating their achievements.

The success of Mullingar Town Band at the World Music Championships was testament to the dedication and hard work of its members, leaders, and support team. The organisers, supervisors, and volunteers played a crucial role in ensuring the band’s memorable stay in Germany. The band’s impressive performances and the support they received made the trip a resounding success, highlighting the incredible spirit and talent of Mullingar Town Band.

The band are looking forward to their next two competitions this season, in Arklow on Sunday 14 July, and at home in Mullingar (St Loman’s grounds) on Sunday 21 July.
